The North Face Something new to our store this year, a brand that needs no introduction, The North [...]

The North Face

Something new to our store this year, a brand that needs no introduction,

The North Face.

Here’s some facts about “TNF”:

TNF works hard to ensure that they have something at every price point, so that they can offer quality gear regardless of budget.

Athletes have a lot of input in the development process. They actually take thermal imaging of the athletes, to know where to make the clothing warmer, and where to make it cooler.

Lifetime warranty on waterproofness.

Kryptic began as the board specific line but is now more of the ride the chair type of line.

The Summit Series is really the big mountain and back country. Highest quality materials, and this is where all the bells and whistles are.

Click here to shop for The North Face at Barrie’s Ski and Sports!

One of the technologies that we wanted to demonstrate today is the

HyVent

system. And, since The North Face describes it better than we can, here it is from the source:

HyVent ® Tech : Waterproof

A superior waterproof, breathable technology utilizing a polyurethane (PU) coating that consists of a tri-component, multi-layer formula for waterproof protection, moisture permeability and durability. HyVent® technology has been lab- and field-tested to ensure the best possible durability and function while also maintaining an optimum level of breathability. To test the level of waterproofness, we subjected HyVent® garments to 20 wash cycles, where garments retained an average of more than 60 PSI on the waterproofing Mullens est.

Benefits

Waterproof

Breathable

Protection in Rain and Snow

Ideal for Skiing and Climbing

The North Face incorporates 5 specialized fabric technologies in our products:

HyVent Alpha

A fabric used in the Summit Series™ collection, this burly, waterproof fabric utilizes a microporous, hydrophobic lamination technology that retains its capabilities in even the most severe conditions. Its laminate membrane, constructed with nearly half a million holes per square inch, allows perspiration to pass through the jacket before it condenses to liquid, keeping you dry, warm and comfortable.

Benefits:

Superior Protection in Most Severe Weather Conditions

Unique Laminate Construction Keeps You Dry, Warm and Comfortable

HyVent 2L

HyVent ® 2-Layer

Utilizing a two-layer construction to stay simultaneously breathable and waterproof in extreme conditions, this fabric excels in any exploration. The durable woven outer layer repels wet weather and protects from abrasion, while the inner-layer utilizes a polyurethane coating and micro-pores to channel water vapor to the outer layer. The end result is a superior waterproof, breathable technology that stays dry inside and out.

Benefits

Two-Layer Protection in Rain and Snow

Repels Wet Weather

Redirects Water Vapor

Ideal for Climbing and Skiing

HyVent 3L

Utilizing a three-layer construction to stay simultaneously breathable and waterproof in extreme conditions, this fabric excels in any exploration. The durable woven outer layer repels wet weather and protects from abrasion, while the mid-layer utilizes a polyurethane coating and micro-pores to channel water vapor from the inner layer to the outer. The comfortable inner layer is also engineered to manage moisture, channeling it up to the micro-pores. The end result is a superior waterproof, breathable technology that stays dry inside and out.

Benefits:

Three-Layer Protection in Rain and Snow

Repels Wet Weather

Redirects Water Vapor

Moisture Management

Ideal for Climbing and Skiing

HyVent DT

Using the same principle as HyVent® 3-Layer but reducing the thickness of the third layer, this waterproof fabric is lightweight, packable and more breathable than other unlined treated fabric. HyVent® DT is created by applying a polyurethane (PU) coating with a DT print matrix, which acts as a dry-touch, half-layer coating. The DT half layer adds durability and comfort by physically separating the HyVent® DT PU coating from the skin. HyVent® DT eliminates the need for a liner and is commonly referred to as a 2.5-layer fabric.

Benefits

More Waterproofing and Breathability than Other Unlined Treated Fabrics

Two-Layer Protection in Rain and Snow

Repels Wet Weather

Redirects Water Vapor

Ideal for Climbing and Skiing

HyVent DT EC

As an alternative to the use of petroleum-derived materials, HyVent® DT EC makes use of natural castor oil from beans, reducing the use of synthetic components by 50 percent compared to conventional fabric membranes. HyVent® DT EC also maintains ideal waterproof, breathable performance qualities and features enhanced performance in cool to cold conditions, making the membrane ideally suited for skiing, snowboarding and other spring- and winter-weather applications.

Benefits:

Durable Protection in Rain and Snow

Repels Wet Weather

Redirects Water Vapor

Moisture Management

Ideal for Backpacking, Climbing and Skiing

Check out Barrie’s Ski and Sports Selection of 4FRNT

4FRNT The “Founding Fathers” of 4FRNT were ski racers that were getting irritated because the industry wasn’t coming up with what the ski community wanted. So, when they started it was out of a garage. Today, most of the skis are built by Elan but designed by 4FRNT.

4FRNT is a ski company. Built to keep the ski industry alive.

In 2010, they started to build skis in house, their “specialty” skis.

Ski construction

Sandwich construction all except for the click and kids skis. You have base material, fiberglass, wood core, fiberglass, topsheet. Sandwich construction gives a smoother ride on the snow.

All are wood core.

Centered bases which allow the base to act as swiss cheese, and then it will soak up the wax. It gives you an ability to rock it.

Cap skis are cheaper to build, they’re lighter, and have more pop. However, they don’t have as smooth of a ride. And, if the cap skis take a hit on the top, it’s nearly impossible to rebuild the skis. Therefore, 4FRNT focuses on sandwich construction.

Turbo

Turbo

Really good high speed ski. Basically their answer to the GS ski. 100mm in the waist. This is the hard chargin son of a gun. Great intro to a new rocker shape. Low to mid 20 mm turn radius. Can really crank. Very easily skis chop and pow, as well.

Aretha

Very similar to the Turbo. Women’s version. Has a similar rocker to the CR, but has a longer effective edge. Slightly more stable at higher speed.

YLE-Backcountry Twin

YLE

Camber under foot, rocker in the tip and tail. Very good all condition ski. Has the true twin tip shape. Has more effective edge. If you want to spin, it’ll spin. But, it’ll also hold up at speed. Has a ton of tail, which will allow you to land most anything. It’s basically a wider turbo, but more symmetrical.

CRJ –Transition ski

CRJ

Similar to the YLE, has reverse sidecut in the tip and tail. Can Slarve the crap out of it. [Wait, did he just say Slarve??? What in the crap is SLARVE?] Slarve is a combo of butter sliding and carving. So, now you know what slarving is, and you’re so much cooler for knowing!!

CR is a park ski that grew into a big mtn ski. Has camber under foot. Rocker in the tip and tail. Reverse sidecut in the tip. Skis the crud like you wouldn’t believe. Has 6cm where there’s no shape. Runs with the JJ, the Bent Chetler, but the CRJ will be able to go faster and charge harder.

EHP – big mtn

EHP

Slow rocker in the tip and tail. Last year of the EHP. Opened up the rocker a bit more than last year. Very slow rise. Perfect if you need something very quick and stable in the trees. Ski is meant to plane through the snow. Meant to have considerable pop in the pow, makes for a more lively powder ride. Has a 40MM turn radius. You can really crank on it to get it to carve. Chop and pow is where it’s meant to live. Not necessarily an all mtn ski.

Renegade-big mtn

Renegade

Fully-rockered, limited release, Eric Hjorleifson pro model . Full rocker means no flat spot on the ski.

Rocker profile matches the turn radius. When you lay the ski on edge, it’s in the turning shape. Works great on the groomers. Perfect for moving between conditions, in powder and then to hard crud. Isn’t just a pow ski. Having the stiff rocker shape means that you have to relearn how to ski on it. Having wood all the way to the wall, you can really feel the difference. Very smooth feel.

Barrie’s has been carrying and backing 4FRNT since their early days in the 4FRNT business. You guys know Barrie, he carries only what he’ll ride. Trust us, 4FRNT is leading the industry.

Dalbello Facts:

3 piece shell has the back, base and tongue. 3 or 2 buckle doesn’t mean that the shell is 3 piece.

Independently owned family owned company.

Dalbello owns their own buckle company. They develop liners for other companies, they develop buckles for other companies.

Polyether is typically a transparent shell. It has more elasticity and elasticity increases in higher temps. Polyurethane has a constant plastic and regardless of the temperature, it has the same flex. These are typically the non-transparent boots.

Only company to make a true 22 and a true 30. Everyone else is taking a different sized shell and putting a toe block in the front

Now, let’s showcase a few of our favorites:

Scorpion

Their first race boot. Built for speed. Stiff and fast.

Has contour 4 which is the way to put relief points into the boot. These relief points are built into the mold, not an after the fact scenario like the rest of the industry. Stance on this boot is medial, meaning that it has more strength to the inside edge. The back of the boot has a lateral cut that allows the upper cuff to have less twist. The 110 is actually customizable to the 130 very easily. 98 Last or a narrow fitting boot.

Scorpion SF

Has polyether which makes it slightly more pliable than the Scorpion. Can remove and replace the bottoms of the boots once they get worn down. Has the same vertical splice on the upper cuff as the Scorpion.

Boss

Has a dropped pivot point which allows for a 3 buckle. Their 3 buckle system is better than a 2 piece overlap system because the middle buckle is further down the ankle and gives the rider better feel of the ski. 110-120 flex.

Action series

Has 4 buckles only because the Europeans aren’t ready for a 3 buckle boot. And, that’s straight from the Rep’s mouth!!!

Aero 6.9

Widest boot in the market. 2 piece overlapping boot. All micro adjustable buckles. Ski/walk mechanism. X module allows for more room for a lower sitting calf.

Krypton

Polyurethane lower and upper. Has contour4 as well. Has a hard Polyurethane boot board. It’s going to stiffen the bottom of the boot, and allows for a better feel. Can customize the tongue, which will soften up the boot, so you can get a custom feel to your boot. “For top level, aggressive and accomplished expert freeride skiers and competitors seeking a close and precise fit with powerful and responsive energy transfer.” – Dalbello.com

Tango

Women’s version of the Boss. Has the hyperband. Can take out shock absorber to make more room for the calf.

And, last, but definitely not least, here’s our favorite AT boot on the market:

Virus Tour ID

What do you get when Glen Plake (have you ever heard of him, fairly decent skier…) personally designs his own AT boot? Something that only Glen Plake would ride. And, as Dalbello states it “For the maximum versatility. Ultimate performance and function up or downhill.”

What makes this boot special? Well, how about being one of the lightest boots on the market, a Vibram sole, and the flexibility to be as comfortable up hill as they are down hill.

BURTON

Ever heard of them? Sure you have. You know the history….or at least you should. You know Jake Burton, right?

Well, if you did not know, the first snowboards were not much more than skate board style planks and grip tape. No bindings, no real edges, no camber, etc.

And, it has taken off, all thanks to Jake Burton. Now you see Burton everywhere as it has become the staple in the snowboarding world.

We want to spotlight one little known fact that Burton still cares about the specialty ski shop. In fact, one of their most popular and best boards around, is the Nug.

Nug

Light under foot and very floaty-poppy.

Drop the length in this board because it rides like a longer board at shorter lengths.

Increased width around waist, lengthened contact points around tip and tail.

Has jumper cables which help create pop. Has Squeeze Box that allows the flexing sections under foot pop, and the stiffer wood outside the foot allows for stability and pop.

But, don’t take our word for it…

Burton, thank you for taking care of us, and supplying us with the best boards you make. May you be blessed for your concerns!!!

LibTech is our hero!!

Have you heard of the boys out of Carlton Washington? They’re what you might call the unsung heroes.

Their founders Mike Olson and Pete Saari are credited for being the first company ever to put side cut on a snowboard. That side cut moved right into every snowboard and ski designed, and gave us what we know it as, parabolic shape.

You remember parabolic, and what they did for the sport. They required about half the effort so you could ski longer, board harder, and finish the day with enough energy to get back to your pimped out Subaru.

So, what’s new from these unsung heroes, these early adrenaline Nordic pioneers? Well, how about farming.

Wait, farming?

Yes, farming.

They have their own tree farm where they grow and harvest all the wood they use in their board construction. They’ve found a wood that will regenerate in three years, and is lighter than most. Not going to tell you what type of wood, because it’s top security clearance and red tape, and…yes, we don’t know what type of wood it is. They wouldn’t tell us.

But, they do it to be as eco friendly as possible. Now, we know what you’re thinking, “I’m not a green-loving, tree-hugging, etc, etc, etc.” But, regardless of your aptitude towards the whole “green movement”, you have to give these guys props for doing what they do best, innovating.

 LIB-Tech EnvironMENTAL Statement

They use an epoxy resin instead of fiber glass. They use mostly caster bean oil, instead of petroleum oil. They are trying to make it a better place for riding not just today, but for tomorrow as well. Which means, regardless of the stage of life you’re in, if you ever have a little shredder living in your skibum ride with you, that little shredder will be able to enjoy the sport just as much as you, all because a few guys up in the Northwest have decided to take a step in the right direction!

So, who are we talking about? MERVYN They make Gnu, Roxy and LibTech. Check out more on their brands HERE

For the purposes of this post, we’re going to focus on LibTech.

What sets them apart from the industry today?

Have you ever picked up one of their skis, and looked down it like a rifle? You may have noticed that it looks like someone has taken a carrot peeler to it, and made it all wavy. Well, they did, sort of. And, they did it on purpose!!!

Magne-Traction (MTX)

We could try and explain it, but why not let them tell us about it?

Magne-Traction serrated edges cut into the snow like a knife giving you more edge hold and control than ever before. Magne-Traction features 7 strategically located and sized bumps along each side of your sidecut. The Biggest bumps are at and between your feet where your balance is centered adding maximum control and power where you need it most. The bumps outside your feet are smaller and less aggressive providing tip and tail control but maintaining freestyle freedom. Magne-Traction is wiggles that work. Viva Technology.

MAGNE-TRACTION FREESTYLE ADVANTAGE:
One of the best things about Magne-Traction is that the extra edge hold you get allows you to ride your board de-tuned for the park and rails and still get great edge hold all over the mountain. Take a file and round your edges so they don’t hang up on the rails, boxes, or ledges. Then go ride everywhere!

That wavy edge is called magne-traction and has been going for nine years. It allows for 7 points of contact when you’re into your flex. In fact, you don’t even have to be into a hard turn to have the edges hook up.

So, what does that mean, my drooling snow-loving friend? Well, it means you can shred it hard on any, ANY conditions. Take your typical hard pack, fairly icy conditions, and you’ll be shredding it like it were the La Nina come to life!

Enough of my ranting, let’s get down to the specifics. We had the chance to sit in on their demo at our shop. It was amazing. These guys know their stuff inside and out. Let’s highlight for you a few that stuck out in our mind.

Boards

Skate banana was the first board to have the rocker technology in them. The skate banana is only available in specialty shops. Great free ride board, feels like a skate board, straight aspen core. Hand crafted Mervyn snowboard. Have a narrow, original and wide setting.

La Nina has no taper angle. Can ride hard, fast, high speeds. Built for pow and speed.

NAS – Narrow Amazing Snowboards

Libtech Freeride is the all terrain 100mm under foot. Perfect for groomers, pow, cut up, camber under foot. Early rise on tip and tail.

Libtech Horsepower is 100mm under foot. Has 100% basalt 100% Colombian gold. Feels softer than the free ride, but, has snap and liveliness from the basalt. Much lighter than the free ride.

Libtech Pow. 115mm under foot. Widest of their line. Great all mountain. Not only powder ski.

Now, these are just a few. Obviously their line is intense. But, if you haven’t had the chance to check these bad boys out, you really need to. Form your own opinion on the Magne-Traction. We can guarantee you will look at the carrot peeler edging with a whole new light.

Normally, this time of year I get way bummed out. It isn’t winter, it isn’t summer, I’ve just gotten off my bike for what feels like the last ride I’ll ever take, and my skis are scared of the rocks still sticking out at the unopened ski areas. So, I’ve got some downtime. What can I do…study…hahahahahaha…..take up crocheting? How about learn to tie flies? Well, you can see my dilemma.

So, imagine my surprise, when I found out, that there’s people as crazy as me, that are pioneering the industry and making mountain bikes with fat enough tires on them, that you can ride in the snow. Holy crap. Check this out.

They call them Fat Bikes. I wonder why. You can’t just build any frame to be this way, it’s not a single speed option. There are companies and websites devoted strictly to the sport. Click here for more from fatbikes.com
